Re: I think my tranny is toast. UPDATE

UPDATE:

Went to the van this morning with my mechanic (and SMB owner himself). He started it and put it in drive, I peeked underneath and saw the rear driveshaft spinning! That explains it. BAD rear diff. We're hoping it is still under a 6 year warranty. So, I thought this would be a good time to upgrade. Called Dynatrak inquiring about a full floater rear. Bad answer. You have to send your current rear end to them, wait 4-6 weeks and pay something like $4200. What? That completely prohibits any sort of upgrade. They don't have ready to go units, even if you send them yours. How does SMB handle this on new builds?

At least it ain't the tranny....

Re: I think my tranny is toast. UPDATE

Jeffrey,

There are a number of posts here about swapping in an entire FF rear axle. Likely a much faster alternative, and probably significantly cheaper as well.

I've heard that Ford has their own full floater rear. Will this fit an E350?

Jeffrey,

See the following thread for some discussion and information on a FF axle.

Good to hear that the problem has been identified, even if it is not an easy fix.

Odd that you can't just buy a new FF from dynatrac. I had SMB swap mine about 3-4 years ago and at that time they got a new dana 70 FF from dynatrac for the van. The price was a bit more than what you were quoted by dynatrac.

Good luck with the repair.

Re: I think my tranny is toast. UPDATE

Yes, Ford used their full floater rear axle on most 350 Vans up to about 1999. I use the Ford full floater on all my vans. But back to your van, it may not need a complete rear end at this time. The tech needs to pull the cover and see what failed, it may just need a part. You may also want to call Chris at U-Joint, he may have a rear end ready for you to buy if you want one.

Re: I think my tranny is toast. UPDATE

Thanks, all, for the great info.

Zeta, I checked with them today. They go through the same waiting period and shipping situation. None in stock.

Re: I think my tranny is toast. UPDATE

Jeffrey - I have a practically brand new Dynatrac front differential that I took out when I installed my ARB lockers. I don't know if it's the same as the rear but it's yours if you want it. 4.10 gearing, 35 spline.

Re: I think my tranny is toast. UPDATE

I spoke with Dynatrac last week, they told me the diffs are stock Dana 60's with custom axle tubes, axles and, in the case of a FF, outer bearings. I wonder if the Dana 60 is up to our rigs. Maybe it's a chance to get something stronger. Will a Dana 80 fit--with mods--for less than $4200? http://ventura.craigslist.org/pts/2985946567.html

Lotsa custom work I would imagine though.
