Re: Hi-Lift Jacks

Rob:

I like the location of your jack. It doesn't block the lower lights, the winch or the license plate and still allows access to the storage/winch. Unfortunately, it looks like my Hella lights are in the way for me being able to put my jack here.

ExpeditionPortal.com has a good article on HiLift jack usage for recovery situations: http://www.expeditionportal.com/resourc ... rades.html

The Hi-Lift mounts work well dipped in black PlastiDip

Mac ,
You will find that there is no obstruction of your Hella Fog Lights mounted this way . If they were Driving or Pencil Beamed lights instead of the Horizontal Beamed Fog Lights it would not suffice !

Re: Hi-Lift Jacks

I look at all these front mounted jacks and wonder if anybody has considered the consequences of an accident? While those big bumpers will totally demolish a small car unlucky enough to be hit by a big SMB but isn't the jack a bit of a risk for ending up in your front seat in a bad crash when it's mounted high like that?

Re: Hi-Lift Jacks

My bet would be that you would have more to worry about in a wreck of that magnitude than a Hi Lift Jack . I once lost a rear mounted Hi Lift Lack on 395 at 60 miles per hour and it wasn't pretty , thankfully there was no one behind me as it cartwheeled down the road , and what was amazing was that the only damage to the Jack was the Shear Pin and of course the paint .

Re: Hi-Lift Jacks

I mounted mine up front and used a cable lock as a "safety" just in case something went wrong or in case someone tried to take it.

Re: Hi-Lift Jacks

FWIW: Chatted with Aluminess a few days ago about putting one on and they stated to stay away from them if possible as they were dangerous with the lifted vans. They suggested and air bag jacks or larger bottle type jacks.

From reading this thread and past experience with them seems like they are the only option in some cases….

Re: Hi-Lift Jacks

Aluminess may be right. I wouldn't want to jack the bumper of my 5 ton lifted monster, but I think that the wheel lift attachment with the Hi Lift is safe (enough). My tire change routine would look like:

Lift flat wheel, place jack stands / blocks under axle, remove jack, change tire, lift fresh tire/axle off stands, remove stands and lower.

I also carry a 6 ton bottle jack for backup.

If the van were to ever slip off a jack, I'd rather it be the Hi Lift with me standing to the side than the bottle jack with me underneath pumping on it. Given a choice between bad and worse, I'll take the bad.
