I built a new battery tray. Mine was "modified" when the Aluminess nerf bars were installed, it was shortenend and one bracket welded to the tray. I took the house battery out to replace it on Friday. It was a hassle. I do not want to have to remove all of the bracketry each time I need to remove the battery. Since the battery is now out for replacement, I thought this is a good time to make that right.
So, the new tray is just like the original SMB issued but, since the brackets are now closer together, it is a little narrower. Enough room for the battery, but less space on the ends. This made it tough to reach the nuts that mount the tray to the brackets, so I welded nuts to the inside of the tray. This allows the tray and battery to be jacked up into place, then bolts threaded from the outside into the nuts held captive in the tray. Just one 5/8" wrench is now needed to install or remove the battery tray.
Note to self...
In the future, remember to wear leather work boots whenever the mig welder is in use.
